YesScotland.com : Sumburghead, Shetland The unique (in UK terms) Norse culture, ornithology, history, archaeology and lifestyle of Shetland makes it a special place to visit.

The cost of air transport to the Northern Isles is fairly high so make the most of your trip there and do not try and go there "on the cheap". The ferry trip to Shetland from Aberdeen, is part of the experience so try not to go budget-class! Pay a bit more and enjoy the restaurants and bars - and the views.

Orkney is a bit easier to get to although you have to travel to the very north of the mainland to catch your ferry. (Transport connection at http://www.scotlandgroupsguide.com/)

To understand Shetland you must remember that Bergen is closer to Lerwick than any mainland Scottish city. Consequently, there is a very obvious Norse culture and a history closely associated with the Vikings. In this respect, the Shetland Isles are truly unique in UK history and culture.

There is so much to enjoy about the Shetlands that YesScotland would recommend a longer rather than a shorter stay - if you are thinking about going there, make the most of it, budget accordingly and you will never regret it. There are some excellent hotels especially (but by no means exclusively) in Lerwick and some superb restaurants and bars. The annual Up Helly A Festival in darkest January is strongly recommended.

Orkney may be closer to the Mainland but unless you go the expense of flying, travel by car will be time consuming. You do not visit Orkney or Shetland en route to somewhere else - they are both destinations in their own right. The islands' attractions, culture, wildlife, activities, shopping (especially jewellery) and hospitality are guaranteed to keep visitors amused and entertained for a long time.

As with Shetland, Orkney has some fine hotels, pubs and restaurants. The smaller islands are very worth exploring and ferries (and air transport) are available - another reason to prolong your visit.

The important thing about Orkney and Shetland is to do your costs before you leave and try not to be restricted by a too frugal budget! There are also few Tour Operators who may also be able to do the groundwork for you.
